The Curatorial Fellow in Photography will assist the senior curatorial staff in all activities pertaining to the Guggenheim’s photography program, including work in support of research, exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, public and digital programs, and other general curatorial functions. Working independently under the guidance of the Senior Curator, Photography, and in collaboration with the Associate Curator, Collections, the Curatorial Fellow will also participate in an ongoing research initiative focused on the museum’s Robert Mapplethorpe collection. • Master’s Degree or PhD candidate in Art History or photography-related field preferred • Two years of museum curatorial experience and deep knowledge of contemporary art are preferred • Publications on topics in contemporary photography are preferred • Demonstrated interest in the work of Robert Mapplethorpe and/or areas of expertise relevant to his practice preferred • Knowledge of photography of the African diaspora of interest • Knowledge of contemporary Native and Indigenous art practices is also of interest • Experience with The Museum System (TMS) and Adobe Photoshop a plus • Foreign language skills are a plus Duties may include but are not limited to the following: • Serve as interdepartmental point person for all activities related to the photography collection and program • Assist in the curatorial department’s photography exhibition program, as required, including research, proposals, checklists, catalog preparations, and interpretive materials • Support research and development phase of exhibition dedicated to the work of conceptual artist Leslie Hewitt • Research and write short texts on collection artworks for catalog entries and the website as called upon • Support Photography Council meetings and events • Participate in the acquisitions process, including research and writing short texts, preparing presentations, and tracking paperwork and relevant correspondence with galleries, artists, and donors • Collaborate with and provide primary curatorial liaison with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Fellow in Photograph Conservation, related to an ongoing characterization study of Mapplethorpe’s works and updating collection database entries. This is a two-year fixed-term position, starting January 2024.
