Photography & Videography Internship Opportunity

Thompson High School | Washington, DC

Thompson High School is a growing, dynamic school community in Washington, DC, where we're building something special! From innovative academic programs and student leadership opportunities to athletics, the arts, community partnerships, and exciting school traditions, there's always a story worth telling.

We're looking for a creative, motivated college student with a passion for photography, videography, and digital storytelling to help us capture it all.

As our Photography & Videography Intern, you'll have the opportunity to document student life, school events, classroom experiences, and the incredible work happening throughout our building. You'll help create engaging content for our social media platforms, website, and school communications while gaining hands-on experience, building your portfolio, and contributing to a growing school brand.

Key Responsibilities

Capture high-quality photos and videos of school events, classroom activities, athletics, student achievements, and everyday school life.

Film and edit short-form videos, including Instagram Reels, student and staff spotlights, event recaps, and promotional content.

Collaborate with the Communications & External Partnerships office to brainstorm creative content ideas and storytelling opportunities.

Assist with developing engaging visual content for the school's website, social media platforms, newsletters, and other communications.

Organize and maintain a digital library of photos and videos for future use.

Help document special events, school traditions, community partnerships, and student-led initiatives.

Ensure all content aligns with the school's branding, messaging, and student privacy guidelines.

Time Commitment

Approximately 8–12 hours per week, with flexibility around college classes and academic commitments.

A combination of on-site photography/videography and independent editing work.

Availability during the school day for scheduled content capture, with occasional opportunities to cover after-school activities and special events.

Schedule coordinated in advance based on school needs and the intern's availability.

Internship duration: One academic semester, with the possibility of extension.

Ideal Candidate

Currently enrolled in a college or university, preferably studying photography, film, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.

Experience with photography, videography, and basic editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Lightroom, CapCut, or Canva.

Familiarity with social media trends and creating engaging digital content.

Strong creative instincts, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

Professional, dependable, and comfortable working in a high school environment.

Passionate about storytelling, education, and celebrating student success.

What You'll Gain

This internship offers an opportunity to build a professional portfolio, gain real-world experience in digital communications and visual storytelling, and see your creative work featured across school platforms. You'll collaborate with school leadership, staff, and students while helping shape the visual identity of a growing high school community.

At Thompson, we're not just documenting what's happening today. We're capturing the moments, achievements, and traditions that will become part of our school's legacy. We'd love for you to help us tell that story!

I used 8–12 hours per week as a suggested commitment, with flexibility for the student's college schedule. That can be adjusted depending on how frequently you need someone on campus.
