Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge - Summer Crew Member with Friends of Nevada Wilderness 300-hour AmeriCorps Position Location: Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada Position: 300 hour/40 hour/week for 10 weeks Term: June 1-Aug 15, 2022 Position Summary: Disconnect from the digital world and spend your summer in nature! About the Refuge: The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, in remote northwest Nevada, provides a haven for a variety of wildlife species: 270 different species to be exact. In addition, the Sheldon NWR plays a critical role in a larger wildlife migration corridor between the Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge (just across the Oregon border) and the wilderness areas in the Black Rock Desert- High Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Basic Qualifications: • 18 or older • US citizen or equivalent • High School Diploma/GED • Fully Vaccinated with boosters for Covid-19 • Ability to hike for up to eight miles with a 30-pound pack • Ability to live and work in rugged conditions with extreme temperature variations • Responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy living environment • Responsible for safe use and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles • Ability to work as part of a team with safety as a primary concern • Ability to live and maintain a working relationship with a team when living in a remote area with limited outside communication • Organizational skills • Responsible for data collection and basic computer literacy • Photography skills are desirable • Ability to look and act in a professional manner, including uniform (provided), grooming and hygiene • A doctor’s medical release is required (for physical activity requirements) Benefits/Experience Gained: The AmeriCorps member will gain valuable training in use of tools to repair, improve, and maintain wildlife habitat.
